Algeria has existed since the French colonization in 1830, when war broke out between the Turkish occupiers and French. The Arabs of Yemen (Banu Hilal and Banu Sulaym) fled their country where they were persecuted by their brothers in Saudi Arabia, where they found refuge and security in what is now called Algeria.
Spain occupied parts of the Algerian coast after the fall of Granada in 1492. By the early 1500s, Spain had captured ports such as Béjaïa, Mers el-Kébir, and Oran and threatened Algiers.
The people and rulers of Algiers requested help from the famous corsair brothers, Aruj (Oruç) and Hayreddin Barbarossa, who were allied with the Ottoman Empire.
In 1516, Aruj Barbarossa entered Algiers, defeated the local ruler, and took control of the city while fighting the Spanish.
After Aruj was killed in battle in 1518, his brother Hayreddin Barbarossa placed Algiers under the protection of the Ottoman Sultan. The Sultan sent troops, weapons, and funding, making Algiers an Ottoman province.
For the next over 300 years (1518–1830), Algeria was governed by Ottoman-appointed rulers (later known as Deys) but enjoyed considerable autonomy. The Ottomans mainly controlled the coastal cities, while many interior tribes retained significant self-government.
In 1830, France invaded Algiers and ended Ottoman rule, beginning the French colonization of Algeria.
So, rather than a straightforward military occupation by the Ottomans, Ottoman rule in Algeria began through a combination of:
local requests for protection against Spain,
military intervention by the Barbarossa brothers,
and the formal incorporation of Algiers into the Ottoman Empire in 1518.
Arabs came to what is now Algeria in two main historical phases:
1. The Arab-Muslim conquest (7th century)
After the rise of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula, Muslim armies expanded westward across North Africa.
Around 647 CE, Arab forces first entered parts of North Africa.
Between 670 and 710 CE, Arab armies led by commanders such as Uqba ibn Nafi advanced through the region.
They encountered resistance from many Berber (Amazigh) tribes, including leaders such as Kusaila and later Queen Dihya (al-Kahina).
According to the most widely accepted historical accounts, Uqba ibn Nafi was killed in 683 CE at the Battle of Vescera (near present-day Biskra, Algeria).
He was killed by a coalition led by Kusaila, an Amazigh (Berber) leader, together with forces that included Byzantine allies.
Here's what happened:
After leading Muslim campaigns across North Africa, Uqba was returning east with a relatively small force.
Kusaila organized an ambush near Vescera.
Uqba ibn Nafi and many of his companions were killed in the battle.
Following the victory, Kusaila briefly took control of Kairouan and much of the surrounding region.
A few years later, Muslim armies returned under new commanders, defeated Kusaila, and eventually re-established Muslim control over much of North Africa.
Some historical details vary between medieval sources, but historians broadly agree that Kusaila's forces were responsible for Uqba ibn Nafi's death in 683 CE.
By the early 8th century, most of present-day Algeria had come under Muslim rule.
Many Amazigh communities gradually adopted Islam, though this process took generations and was not uniform across the region.
2. Arab tribal migrations (11th century)
Several centuries later, a much larger migration of Arab tribes took place.
In the 11th century, the Banu Hilal and Banu Sulaym tribes migrated from Egypt into North Africa.
Their migration was encouraged by the Fatimid rulers to weaken the Zirid dynasty.
These tribes settled across much of Algeria, especially the plains and steppe regions.
This migration had a lasting influence:
Arabic became more widespread.
Bedouin culture spread into many rural areas.
Over time, many Amazigh communities adopted Arabic as their primary language while retaining aspects of their local traditions.
The result
Modern Algeria is the product of centuries of interaction between:
the indigenous Amazigh (Berber) peoples, who have lived in North Africa since ancient times,
Arab settlers and tribes,
and later influences from the Ottomans and the French.
Today, many Algerians identify as Arab, Amazigh, or both, reflecting this long and complex history. Islam is the majority religion, and both Arabic and Tamazight (Berber) are official languages.
Massinissa (c. 238–148 BCE) lived more than 800 years before the Arab conquest of North Africa.
He was the first king to unite the Numidian tribes and is regarded as one of the most important figures in Algerian history.
Here are some key facts:
Massinissa was king of the Kingdom of Numidia, which covered much of present-day northern Algeria and parts of Tunisia.
During the Second Punic War, he eventually allied with the Roman Republic against Carthage.
After the war, he united many Numidian tribes into a stronger kingdom.
He encouraged agriculture, trade, and the development of towns, helping to strengthen Numidia.
Massinissa died in 148 BCE, centuries before:
the Roman Empire fully annexed Numidia,
the arrival of Islam in North Africa in the 7th century,
the Arab migrations of the 11th century,
or Ottoman and French rule.
Because of this, Massinissa is considered an ancient Numidian (Amazigh/Berber) king, not an Arab or an Ottoman ruler. He is an important historical figure for many Algerians and Amazigh people as a symbol of the region's pre-Roman and pre-Islamic history.
